Before regular freezing begins, look from the ground for open joints, spalled brick, crown cracks, loose caps, rust, or staining. Water already inside defects can make winter deterioration worse.
Schedule a chimney inspection early enough to address findings. Needed work might include chimney crown repair, chimney tuckpointing, chimney cap installation, or chimney flashing repair. Complete repairs and required cure periods before applying compatible chimney waterproofing.
For wood burning, prepare dry fuel and arrange chimney sweeping and cleaning when deposits require it. Test alarms and review operating instructions.
