Spring is a useful time to compare your chimney with photos from the previous year. From the ground, look for a tilted or missing cap, displaced flashing, loose brick, mortar fragments, new stains, rust, or a damaged chase cover. Check attic and ceiling areas for water evidence when safely accessible.

Storm damage does not always appear directly below the entry point. Chimney leak repair should consider cap, crown, masonry, flashing, chase cover, and adjacent roofing. A missing or damaged termination may need chimney cap installation; metal deterioration on a framed chase may require a chimney chase cover.

Do not climb a wet or storm-damaged roof. Document changes from a safe location and arrange a chimney inspection when conditions changed or the system will be used again.
